Trek being the history fanatic that he is, got invited by a friend from church to do a rucksack march through Bastogne, Belgium in honor of the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge. He decided to take Cadence & Lorien with him. It was cold (FREEZING COLD), wet, raining, & hard, but the girls did a great job. Their 2 friends from church came too so they had fellow teenagers to keep them moving along which helped motivate them to enjoy it.
Trek was excited to have a weekend with his oldest girls where the little ones weren't getting in the way of "teaching important history." ha ha ha. I think all 3 of them had a blast.
Breakfast in Bastogne |
The march was anywhere from 8-26km around the city of Bastogne. It was SO wet. At some points there were up to their ankles in mud. It was 32 degrees F (0 degrees C) out there which made it even more of a learning experience knowing that those troops were out there in the cold wet snow fighting a war. The girls were VERY grateful to just be walking on the outskirts learning history & not in a full fledged war fight.
All along the march there were people dressed up reinacting different scenes from the Battle of the Bulge. I think Trek was in heaven.
Even within the city, there were old war vehicles & people dressed up for the occassion. It was like taking a step back in time.
The foxholes were a great reminder of what these soldiers suffered through during that terrible battle.
The girls enjoyed their time with friends throughout the whole weekend.
Saturday night there was a fabulous light show, music & dancing production to celebrate 75 years. Trek & the girls LOVED it. Trek took videos of most of the program which you can see by clicking the links below:
I'm so glad they got to go & spend those two days together. It was good bonding time for Trek & his girls, but also a great learning experience for all 3 of them. I love the many amazing historical sights in Europe. We are so blessed to be experiencing all of this.
