U.S. Capitol

We knew Trek would be leaving for a few months starting the 2nd week of January, so we wanted to take a little trip before he left for some good family time.  Trek & I always like to go to the temple before any long separation to help get us spiritually fed & ready for the trials we will face so we decided to head up to Washington DC again to visit the temple & a few fun family sights with the kids.  We stayed with some of our best friends who are stationed up at Ft. Meade, MD so it was a great trip all around.

On our way up, Trek snagged us some tickets to tour the US Capitol building.  We've been there before, but not on a tour INSIDE.  I was very excited.

I love that my kids love learning.  They were just as excited about the capital building as I was.  I'm happy they enjoy history like Trek & I do.

The center of the Capitol (aka the Dome) is beautiful beyond description.  There are no lights in the room, just a circle of windows way up high in the dome.  All the light in the room is natural light & it's spectacular.  The dome itself is lined with gold & beautiful artwork.  The ceiling is painted (just like those in Europe) with important figures that tell a story.

In the center of the dome is George Washington surrounded by many people.  On the outskirts of the dome are little groupings of people who signify different things.  Neptune is there with his Trident.  Cadence was pretty excited because she like mythology.  She pointed him out right away.

This portion of the painting depicts the industrial revolution. . . the many inventions that will make this country great.

Liberty is fighting off the prejudices of the world next to a soaring eagle.  It was just beautiful.

Just below the windows of the dome, the entire circle is surrounded by what looks like carvings of events in this nation's history, but it's not.  It's a circular PAINTING.  (It totally looks like carvings.  I can't believe that's paint!)  You can follow the painting all the way around the room from the start of this great country all the way to the Wright Brothers' first flight.  It's amazing to look at the whole thing in it's entirety.  I love telling stories through pictures.

The real reason we wanted a tour was so that we could see the original of this painting.  This is a picture of those on the Mayflower who came to America through Plymouth Rock. . . the pilgrims.  The man holding the Bible is Trek's great. . . great. . . (lots of greats) grandfather William Brewster.  He's been working on the genealogy on that side of the family so it was really neat to see the original painting.

The entire dome room is surrounded by these famous paintings that depict important events that took place in this nation's history. . . The Mayflower, Pocahontas, Revolutionary War, Civil War, etc.

After the dome room, we went into the original room that our forefathers used to meet to make government decisions.  It was a beautiful room, again only lit by sunlight through the ceiling.  It's crazy to think some of the greatest men of this country met here to create the important laws for this country.  The room is acoustically amazing.  There is one spot in the room where one person can stand & speak & the sound will resonate around the entire room as if he were speaking into a microphone.  No microphones were needed.  It's crazy to think they thought that up way back when the capital was built.

This room now houses over 100 statues.  Each state has 2 stone statues in this room of important people from their states.  Brigham Young was chosen for the state of UT (I thought that was pretty cool) & there were a few others I recognized: Helen Keller, Robert E. Lee, & several others.

The tour guide we had really liked our kids & asked them if they wanted to see a super secret room that not many people get to see.  That got them really excited.  She took us to the original Supreme Court room.  It's TINY.  I can't imagine everything being decided by such few people.  It's amazing to see how times have changed.

We had a blast.  I really like it when we can take the time to spend an entire day in one place.  I like to really learn & explore these historical settings.  The kids love it too.  We had a blast.

Growing by Leaps & Bounds

So I've been a total slacker & haven't blogged since Christmas.  Here we are in February & I'm finally getting myself moving.  Trek left early in January for a few months of military training & I thought for sure I'd have all the time in the world to accomplish "me" things while he was gone.  Boy was I wrong.  Six kids & being Mom & Dad?  Yikes.  I'm busier than I've ever been in my life.  It makes me appreciate my sweetheart more than I have in the past.  I miss you Trek.  Come home to me soon. Our family just isn't our family without daddy here.

Anywho. . . this little guy won't stop growing.  Doesn't he know that being the youngest child requires him to stay a baby forever?  Not only did this kid start crawling at 4 months. . . he's 8 months now & he's just about to take off running.  I wish he could stay a baby forever.  But boy is he a cutie pie or what?

Rub a dub dub three boys in a tub!

My favorite thing to watch Canyon do is watch him say goodbye to the girls every morning.  We walk them to the bus stop, but then we go inside & wave at them through the window when the bus comes past our house again.  He just stands there & waits to see that big yellow bus come by.  It's the sweetest thing ever.  When it passes, his sisters wave at him out the bus window & he just smiles & laughs at them.  It's precious.

Bladen (4 years old) woke me up early this morning by putting his hand on my face & saying

"Mommy, Mommy, I made breakfast for the family.  Come & eat the toast I made."

He proceded to wake up the rest of the family & was THRILLED to "feed" us his toast.  The kitchen was a disaster.  Bread was open & hanging off the counter, bread slices were carefully laid all over the counter & kitchen tables, & each piece of bread had 1/4 a bottle of pure cinnamon dumped on top. There was a stool next to the stove where he had climbed up & searched my spice cupboard for the cinnamon.  Bless his little heart.

We all sat down & forced our "toast"
(aka flaming hot cinnamon bread)
down & thanked him for thinking of us. He was SO proud!  Later this morning I pulled him up to the counter on a stool & REALLY taught him how to make cinnamon toast & showed him how to work the toaster, how to butter the toast, & I let him taste the difference between cinnamon & cinnamon/sugar.  He's SO excited to try to make "real" toast for us again tomorrow.  I love my kids. Seeing him want to do things for us & for his 4 year old self to have the initiative to try something like this on his own really makes me proud.  I love you Blade.

Christmas Fun

Christmas morning is always fun no matter where you are.  This year was a first for us.  We've never spent Christmas by ourselves in our own home before.  We've always gone to family's houses or had family come to our house.  It was sad not having any family with us Christmas morning, but we still had each other & that made everything wonderful.  We spent the entire morning opening gifts.  The kids get 3 gifts from us because Christ got 3 gifts the day he was born.  However, the kids still have grandparents & Aunties & Uncles who send gifts to them.  We had a blast.

There were SO MANY pictures that I just picked a few to put on here otherwise you'd be bored to tears seeing pictures FOREVER.  But we had a wonderful Christmas & we are SO grateful for our friends & family all around the world.  Thank you all for your love & your gifts.  We miss you all.

I got Cadence a dress to wear for her talent show
audition.  She's singing "Let it Go" from the movie
Frozen & she wanted to dress up like "Elsa."  This
dress looks pretty close to Elsa's dress.  Cadence
was thrilled.

My mom bought me a nail polish rack for my
bathroom.  Yes, I hoard  nail polish.  This guy
holds 96 bottles & it's already almost full.
My name is Dani & I LOVE nail polish.

Auntie Tarrish sent Bladen $20 & a toy mustache.  We tried to
get him to wear his mustache & he cried & screamed because
he didn't like the way it felt.  He was literally scared to death of it.
We felt bad for laughing, but it was hilarious.

My transformer lover.

Auntie Char gave us an amazing family gift: a popcorn machine
for family movie night & night games in the summer.
We're going to have a blast with this.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!

Canyon LOVED his sock monkey from Auntie
Tarrish.  Can't you tell?
(he really did. . . he was just so sick)

Craiger was NOT scared of his mustache.

We got a couple family games from family this year too.
We're playing them all for New Years tonight.  The Potters
LOVE games.

A sick, but sweet boy enjoying his new toys.

Trek's Gifts 2013
My Gifts 2013
Trek got me a Dyson Vacuum & my daddy got me a beautiful
red peacoat as my "daddy gift."  It was a great Christmas.

It was a beautiful Christmas.  And even though there were lots of new presents & toys to enjoy, we are always grateful for the greatest gift we've ever received: our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ.

Merry Christmas!
