Cadence - Huushuur hiisen! - June 12, 2023

Sain baitsgaana uu?

It's been another great week! Since the stake center has been open, we've been able to teach and meet with so many people because it's so much easier for people to meet there. It's been such a blessing to have that building open up. Sadly, last Sunday we weren't able to go to sacrament with our ward in the new building though because I got really sick but many of our friends told us afterwards how much they enjoyed sacrament and how they felt the Spirit even more that Sunday. Recently, so many people have been reaching out to us about their interest in the Church and it has felt like such a blessing. It's as if the Spirit is telling us who to help through the people themselves. My testimony of the joy of the gospel has grown so much this transfer just because I have seen the joy our friends and investigators have felt as they have progressed and grown their own testimonies.

The Gift of Tongues has continued to bless me so much as well. As the weeks progress, the language is finally clicking to the point where I feel comfortable. Before, I understood things when I really tried hard to focus and when I absolutely needed to understand but now the understanding just comes for the most part. I feel comfortable making phone calls and jumping into lessons. While I still ask my companion to clarify if I understood right, I feel better about knowing what's going on and it makes the work so much more enjoyable and fun! It's definitely still hard and I still have days where I simply can't understand or speak, but I feel like I've finally hit the tipping point where the language just clicks and now I can just focus on getting better at it without worrying about not being good enough. Unless someone starts asking me questions about something random like our apartment water pressure levels or something (which did happen haha).

English has downsized a lot because school is out and everyone is traveling to the countryside. But the students who have stayed are super awesome and we've been having fun teaching. The most humbling thing is having your students correct your spelling. After the mission, my spelling in English will have improved so much haha. Also, many of our investigators have started coming to English, so it's really fun to be able to teach them both about the Church and about English. Its cool to see our church lives and English lives connect in that way because it makes my English teaching work still feel like missionary work. I am thankful for this work and for all the service we get to do.

Other fun stuff that happened this week:
- We went to a member meal and their youngest son was literally insane. While we were eating, he ran out of his room with a giant shotgun looking nerf gun and started shooting in every direction while laughing like an evil maniac
- My companion and I made huushuur (Mongolian hot pocket things) and almost set off the fire alarm because of the smoke
- We've been out of hot water for a few days....
- For some reason, Mongolia decided it wanted to be hot so today its 90 degrees - it feels like a literal desert
- One of our ghosting investigators reached out to us and told us she was too busy to come to sacrament but wanted us to go to a museum with her that same day haha
- I have to learn how to play the organ now because the new stake center has a giant organ and naturally, everyone wants to hear the organ but no one knows how to play the piano
- One guy called us about English class and then kept asking us questions about why the teachers all walk in pairs of two. Then he asked if we were going to trap him in church lessons at English class...yah we?

This week, I was studying a lot about the importance of the Book of Mormon. I came across these amazing scriptures in Jacob 4:

Now in this thing we do rejoice; and we labor diligently to engraven these words upon plates, hoping that our beloved brethren and our children will receive them with thankful hearts, and look upon them that they may learn with joy and not with sorrow, neither with contempt, concerning their first parents.

For, for this intent have we written these things, that they may know that we knew of Christ, and we had a hope of his glory many hundred years before his coming; and not only we ourselves had a hope of his glory, but also all the holy prophets which were before us.

These verses really helped me to appreciate the work and effort that went into creating the Book of Mormon. So many prophets faced persecution and hardships for so long, yet they continued to dedicate all their time and efforts to engraving the plates for us, so that we could learn more about Christ. I know that the prophets of old and the prophets today testify of Christ and that they were and continue to be called by God to lead His church. I know that they receive true revelation for us from God. I also know that through studying the Book of Mormon, we can come closer to Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father and feel their love. I am so thankful for the Book of Mormon and for the impact it has had on my life. It have given me so much direction on how to improve and how to feel my Heavenly Father's love. I invite you all to study the Book of Mormon this week. If you haven't read it in a while, start at the beginning. Try to studying how the stories in the Book of Mormon apply to your life specifically. I promise that doing so will help you see what Heavenly Father wants you to know at this time. I love you all so much and hope you have a wonderful week!

Love,

Sain baitsgaana uu!

How are you all this week? This past week was amazing and we got so much done but it also felt like the longest week of my mission by far haha. I love my companion though because she helps me stay diligent so we always manage to have things to do. This transfer has felt so productive and my love for the area has been growing more and more every day. All of our investigators are progressing so well and we are so excited to teach them every lesson. I truly love all of our investigators with my whole heart and I am so excited for all of them to get baptized one day! We had a really cool experience with one of our investigators during a lesson this week. We felt the Spirit so strongly as we taught and I was impressed to share many different scriptures with her. At one point, a random verse popped into my head and I flipped right to it in my Mongol Book of Mormon. The craziest part was that I didn't even have it marked in my scriptures but I felt the Spirit telling me that this verse was important to share. In 3 Nephi 27, it says:

21 Verily, verily, I say unto you, this is my gospel; and ye know the things that ye must do in my church; for the works which ye have seen me do that shall ye also do; for that which ye have seen me do even that shall ye do;

I love this verse because I feel like it perfectly explains our purpose as members of the Church and disciples of Christ. We are commanded to follow Christ. In order to follow Christ we do what He did. That means we must love others, serve others, and simply be a kind and honorable person. I am thankful for the Church because through it, I have learned about Christ's example and have learned how to become the better person I want to be. Of course, none of us are expected to be perfect or just like Jesus. But through following Christ's example, we can improve every single day. I find that this improvement brings fulfillment to my life. I am so thankful for Christ and the example He provided for us!

This week we also had a Zone Conference! It was an especially cool conference because I have never felt the Spirit so strongly before. All the messages that were shared were focused on finding motivation and goal setting on the mission. Our mission President is really encouraging us to apply all of our time, talents, and efforts to improving the work that is happening in Mongolia. I felt his love for us as he encouraged us to make stronger efforts to improve. Since my companion is an STL, we got to give a training together at Zone Conference too which was super fun. We talked about how motivation is like a spark but we need "kindling" to hold that fire and keep it burning. Then we did a little scavenger hunt where the missionaries had to find the "kindling" we hid around the church. Each kindling stick had a quote from PMG or prophets about how to find motivation on the mission. It was a super fun activity and I learned a lot just through prepping the conference. Also, my companion got to conduct the whole conference which was pretty cool. I've never seen a Sister Missionary conduct before so it was pretty awesome!

English is still going well. We designed some really cool pass-along cards for our class so we are excited to start proselyting those in our spare time. A lot of people have gone to the countryside for the summer so we aren't expecting the class to stay very big right now but we are happy for the few that have stayed to learn with us. It's been a blast so far!

Also, in more exciting news - our Stake center just became approved by the government so we can now start using it for religious purposes. Before we could only teach English in the building but now our ward will start sacrament there on Sunday! This is a really big deal and historic moment in Mongolian Church history because this has been in the works for so long! It was basically built for 2 years now and remained empty because of the law. Now we are lucky to be the first missionaries to attend sacrament in the new building ever! And the best part is it is a 4 minute walk from our apartment so we are happy to be closer haha.

Other fun things that happened this week:
- Children's Day is a huge holiday in Mongolia, so we saw many Parades and balloons and cotton candy and toys everywhere. Everyone gathered in families all across the city to celebrate and spoil their kids all day. It was super fun!
- We also had a No Car Day in the city last Saturday. We were allowed to walk on all the streets all day because no buses or cars were allowed. It was super fun but difficult to go from our area to the mission home, which was kind of far from us
- More and more youth have been coming to Mutual, which has been a blessing. Last Mutual, we actually played outside games because the weather was so nice and so warm! I'm not used to warm Mongolia weather hehe.
- We put 3 people on date for baptism! Please pray that all of our investigators will go through with their baptism! They are all so awesome and I love them so much!
- We tried delivering cookies to a family that lived in a ger but they weren't home, so we just left their cookies outside their locked gate. We hope the wild dogs didn't eat them haha

Anyways, I love you all and hope you have a great week!

Love,
Sister Potter

Day 10 - Tuesday, June 20th, 2023 - Athens, Greece - Beach Day

Day 10 - Tuesday, June 20th, 2023 - Athens, Greece - Beach Day

We got to sleep in until 7 on our last day of the trip.  Trek ran & got us some delicious breakfast at a Greek bakery down the road & we had breakfast at our apartment.  The ham & cheese croissants were amazing.  The kids love chocolate croissants!  And the baklava was the best I’ve ever had.

We met all our friends at the Acropolis train station, then the big group of us got onto the hop on hop off bus that went to the Athen’s beaches.  The kids were itching to go swimming again & I wanted to experience the famous Athen’s beaches everyone talks about.  We were NOT disappointed.  The bus ride was about an hour & we wound up going to a beautiful beach with a full on island in the middle of the water with Ancient Greek ruins on top.  We were able to rent some umbrellas & chairs for $15 & we just relaxed ALL DAY LONG.  It was amazing.

The kids spent the entire time in the water playing or swimming out to the island to explore the ruins.  Trek was able to get some good drone shots of them climbing the ruins.  Bladen found an actual crab in a shell, so the boys spent a good chunk of the day creating a habitat for their new crab friend.

Trek & I enjoyed the shade of the umbrella while we visited with our adult friends.  We ordered some fun little hot ham & cheese sandwiches & Trek got a non-alcholholic mojito.  We spent about 5.5 hours at that beach & if you ask my kids, it was the highlight of our trip.  Water, friends, & fun for the win.

Our bus back to the city was about 30 minutes late, but we got on when it came & it was another hour ride back to the city.  One of our friends had to catch a ferry to Crete later that night so we wanted to make sure to give them plenty of time to get back to the city.  After we got off the bus, we wandered in & out of the many shops downtown.  There were so many fun things to look at.

For dinner we stopped at an adorable outdoor Greek restaurant in the middle of EVERYTHING.  I loved the hustle & bustle of the city.  The restaurant was in a garden area & they had wonderful misters & large fans to cool you off.  The kids LOVED those.  We ordered a wonderful Mediterranean dinner & loved every bit of it.  I had chicken souvlaki & Trek had the Greek lasagne.  Everything we ate was amazing.

After dinner we walked to Little Kook.  Our friends recommended it when they went to Athen’s the week before & I knew we had to go see it for ourselves.  It’s a famous dessert alleyway. . . As in FULL alleyway.  They have ice cream, crepes, cakes, milkshakes & more.  Every inch of that entire alley is decorated in Alice in Wonderland things.  It’s SO crazy, your eyes don’t even know what to focus on.  There is stuff EVERYWHERE.  I guess they pick a theme each year & decorate the entire alley in that theme, then they change the decorations after summer for Halloween & then again for Christmas . . . Then they start a new theme in January for the next year.  Alice in Wonderland was 2023’s theme & it was INCREDIBLE.  We were in awe of every little decoration in every nook & cranny.

We all ordered really fun desserts & had a blast.  I had the King Louie Coco milkshake & it came with a DONUT ON TOP!!!  It was SO good.  Coconut & chocolate ice cream & then a chocolate donut, whipped cream, & a cookie on top.  The desserts were completely over the top like the restaurant itself.  It was so fun.  What an experience.  I’m glad we went.

After that, one of the families left for their ferry, while the rest of us walked to Haphaestus’ temple to look around.  It was closed, but we could see it through the gates.  There was a little marketplace set up just outside & we were able to buy a few Greek laurel headbands for my costume collection.  We said goodbye to our friends & rode the subway back to our apartment for bed.

The next morning we woke up at 2:30am & had a driver pick us up outside the apartment who drove us straight to the Athens airport.  Our final European vacation was finally over & it was our best yet.  I’m SO grateful we were able to go on this cruise/vacation.  We will never forget the fun we had there together as a family.
