Well you learn something new every day. Did you know that there are actually TWO Smithsonian Air & Space Museums? I know I didn't. We visited the Air & Space Museum at the National Mall back in August when my parents were here, but we came across another one on our way home from Ft. Meade. This guy is actually in Virginia & he is AMAZING!!!
I think the kids' favorite part of the whole museum was the Discovery Space Shuttle. As a lover of anything space related, I felt like a little kid in a candy store standing next to this. Not many people can say they've seen the actual space shuttle up close & personal. I HAVE & so have my kids. This alone was worth the entire trip. What an amazing thing to get to see.
Trek's favorite thing in the museum was the Blackbird. . . the highest flying plane in the Air Force. It was HUGE. In fact, we had to go up to the top floor of the museum to try to take a picture of it, & it still didn't fit in the camera lens. The boys loved this plane so much that they spent their Christmas money on toy Blackbirds.
Another really neat plane to see was the Enola Gay . . . the plane that dropped the bomb on Hiroshima to end WWII. What an amazing piece of history!
This museum was amazing. There was an IMAX theater, an entire CONCORD plane, all sorts of fun airplanes, space satellites, helicopters, & other flight related vehicles. There was even a flight control tower where we took the kids to watch the planes take off & land at the nearby airport. You could even hear the traffic control officers talking back & forth as planes were getting ready to take off & land. We ate lunch at the McDonalds inside & spent lots of Christmas money in the gift shop. We were SO glad we stopped on our way home. It was the perfect ending to a fun little vacation for the Potter Family.
