Christmas Eve

We have the most amazing landlord.  She lives in the states, but her mother, father, & 2 sisters live here in Germany next door to us, & just down the street.  We call her parents Opa & Oma & just adore them.  We caroled at their house & while we were there, they invited us to join them for their Christmas Eve choir performance at the local church in the village.  Of course we wanted to experience culture & we went & saw Opa sing in the choir.  I'm so glad we gave the kids an opportunity to experience different religion that ours, in a different language than ours, in a different place than ours.

After church we came home & ate our Christmas Eve dinner (ham, funeral potatoes, green bean casserole, & pie), & then settled down for a Christmas movie.  While we were watching our movie, Craiger heard sleigh bells in my bedroom & when we investigated we found 8 packages on my bed with my window wide open.  Santa had snuck into our room & placed Christmas Eve presents on my bed.  The kids were SO excited to see what he brought.

Pajamas of course!

This year he brought us all onesies which were hilarious.  I got the evil queen from Snow White.

Canyon got Mario pj's (of course).

Craiger got the most adorable astronaut pj's.

Bladen became a raptor when he put his pj's on.

And Taya obviously got a rainbow unicorn.

Lorien & Cadence (being the tag team that they are) got Stitch & Angel for their pajamas.

And Trek got Buddy the Elf pajamas.  SO FUNNY.

What a fun Christmas Eve surprise.

We watched Santa Claus 2 in our new pj's & then headed to bed early so Santa could come visit. What an exciting night.

Kaiserslautern Christmas Market

The Monday before Christmas we decided to go to Rothenburg, but the weather was rainy & freezing so we felt like it wasn't going to be worth the 3 hour drive to stand in the freezing rain all day.  Instead we stayed close to home & visited the Kaiserslautern Christmas Market.

We were having so much fun eating food that we literally forgot to take pictures.  We did get a few pictures of the beautiful church downtown though.

We are going to miss Christmas markets.  The one month that they happen makes the Christmas season SO magical. . .
Until next year,
Auf Weidersehen!

Baking

I love holiday baking.  Once all the programs & school/work functions were taken care of, I finally got a few days to sit down & bake all the yummy goodies we love to eat at Christmas.

I ended up making 150 pieces of peppermint fudge,
150 pieces of peanut butter fudge,
150 Christmas Lights & Nutcracker chocolates,
75 Caramel Marshmallow Treats,
75 Peanut Butter Balls,
75 Gingerbread Cookies,
175 Frosted Sugar Cookies,
3 Batches of Christmas Crack,
2 Batches of Muddy Buddies,
300 Homemade Caramels,
& 75 Peanut Butter Blossom Cookies

Of course we can't eat all of that, so we made 40 plates of goodies for neighbors, friends, Trek's co-workers, & several people from church.

We took 3 whole days at an average of 4 hours a day to deliver the plates & carol at people's houses.  It's never taken us that long to deliver goodies.  I forget how spread out the villages here in Europe are.  It literally takes 15-30 minutes to get from each house to the next house & when you're delivering 40 plates, that adds up fast.  We spent over an hour just planning & mapping out the order in which we'd deliver them so we'd make the best use of our time.

Regardless of time, we had a BLAST as a family.  My girls especially love to carol at people's houses.  I just love the family together time.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Canyon's Class Christmas Program

Canyon's teacher is a lover of music & not only lets them go to music class every week, but teaches music inside her classroom.  Not all the classes do this so I find Canyon's class extra special.  She took all of his class to the BX & performed their own little Christmas program for all the parents.

Canyon is hilarious in these videos.  He's completely bored & trying to be good at first, but as each song rolls out you see his patience wearing thin.  Once "Must Be Santa" hits, he starts overacting in his songs & it starts to get funny.  My favorite video is "Little Drummer Boy" because he adds a lot of dancing & hilarious movement into what should be a slow solemn song.  What a ham.

My kid & his bows.  SO FUNNY.

Great job Canyon.  You're super cute.

Phase 2 of my Dental Adventure

PHASE 2 of my oral craziness is finally DONE! My smile may be damaged, sore, & a little empty in 3 areas, but notice that it is still there. I absolutley refuse to stop smiling.
December 19th was awful. I'm not going to lie or sugar coat it. We are all allowed to have "those days" every now & again. Life is still beautiful, & I am truly stronger today than I was yesterday. It's a new day & the sun is shining. Phase 2 of my oral "project" was the extraction of 3 adult teeth. Guys, I'm scared of the dentist to get my teeth cleaned. I even went 8 years without seeing a dentist when I graduated high school (FYI DON'T DO THAT) because I was scared of them. Now I go faithfully every 6 months trying to conqer that fear & to keep my mouth healthy & strong, but I still have anxiety about it. Fast forward to me sitting in a chair fully awake & aware while 2 people had me in a head lock, knees on my legs to use as leverage as they pulled & prodded these 3 healthy (not wanting to yield) teeth from my mouth. What should have taken 15 minutes took an hour & a half thanks to a VERY stubborn left tooth who refused to let go. Let's not forget that they had to try to re-numb me 3 times because my left side doesn't numb for some weirdo reason (I had the same issue with epidurals during labor/delivery). Needless to say, there was pain, quite a bit of blood, & there were many many more tears than I'd like to admit, & for a while there, I felt like there would never be an end to the madness. But as in life, the sun does set on these things & rises again in it's glory. I woke up today sore, but grateful I am alive, grateful I can do hard things, & SO VERY GRATEFUL this is done.
I recall a beautiful talk by Hugh B. Brown from 1973 about a currant bush. The gardner notices his currant bush has overgrown & begins to cut it back bit by bit. As he does so, it's as if he can hear the cries of the bush "How could you do this to me? I was making such wonderful growth. I was almost as big as the shade tree & the fruit tree that are inside the fence & now you have cut me down. How could you do this to me? I thought you were the gardner here." The gardner then replies "Look, little currant bush, I am the gardner here, & I know what I want you to be. I didn't intend you to be a fruit tree or a shade tree. I want you to be a currant bush, & someday little currant bush, when you are laden with fruit, you are going to say 'Thank you Mister Gardner, for loving me enough to cut me down. Thank you Mister Gardner.'" We all go through hard things in life. . . they vary from person to person & what is hard for one is not for another, but we all go through them. But these experiences in life make us stronger, wiser, they make us better people, & allow us to show our true potential. Today, I had to cut back my smile, one of the few things in life that make me ME. Now my smile is a little broken, "holey", & different than what it's been in the past. I needed to cut it back so that 2 years from now, a new, brighter, healthier, more perfect smile can emerge. . . stronger, happier, & true. I am grateful for hard things. I am grateful for the chance to push through these experiences & grow from them. I am strong! And I will continue to be strong, & I will continue to smile (holes & all) because that is who I am.

Cadence's Winter Band Concert

December always brings more concerts.  Cadence had here 2nd High School Band concert in December & it was wonderful.  I always love hearing my kids perform.

Great job Cadence.  You are amazing on oboe.  We love you.

Canyon's Elementary Christmas Program

Canyon's school put on the most adorable Christmas Program ever.  It was about an hour long & it was SO CUTE.  His school has K-2nd grade so all the kids were little & so funny to watch.  I learned at this program that I need to get this kid in drama.  He's a TOTAL HAM.

I was way in the back of the room, so my pics & videos aren't the best, but Canyon is the cutie pie in the blue plaid shirt  & the green reindeer antlers on the 2nd row from the bottom (on stage).  Just look for the ham totally oversinging & over acting.  That's him.

The kids did a fabulous job.  Canyon has such a wonderful first grade class & a wonderful teacher who truly loves her students & wants them to succeed.  I loved their adorable concert.

Great job Canyon!

Gingerbread Houses

While Trek & the older girls were in Bastogne, I had some fun one on four time with the other four kiddos.  We made gingerbread houses, ate Taco Bell for dinner (a rarity, but their favorite), visited Santa Claus at the mall, & came home to drink hot chocolate & watch Christmas movies.  It was such a fun little weekend together.

My gingerbread house was simple, but actually didn't fall over this time.

Bladen loves the German cranes that build everything out here.  He decided to make a gingerbread crane instead of a gingerbread house.  He did a good job too.

Craiger was very proud of his little house.

Hot cocoa & warm cookies are always the best.

I love the holiday season.  I love family time.  I love these kiddos.  I love my family.
