Day 3 - Tuesday, June 13, 2023 - Solerno, Amalfi Coast, Italy

Day 3 - Tuesday, June 13, 2023 - Solerno, Amalfi Coast, Italy

On Tuesday morning, we ported in Solerno, Italy at 7:00 am.  Solerno is along the Amalfi Coast.  We got up early & had breakfast in our dining hall & it was incredible.  Everything was made to order & delicious.  I had yogurt & granola with hasbrowns & eggs.  The kids loved omelets, French toast, & chocolate banana pancakes.

We’ve been to the Amalfi Coast area before & have already done all the tours at Vesuvius, Naples, & Pompeii, so we ventured off into unknown territory.  We left the boat a little before 8am & walked about a half mile to the train station in Solerno.  We took the train to Paestum which was only an hour train ride.  It was SO nice because all the cruise ship passengers were headed to Naples & barely anyone was on our train.  For the first time in our four years in Europe, we had police on our train & they checked everyone’s passports.  We always carry them with us, but we’ve never been checked, EVER.  We were glad we had them today.  We got off the train in Paestum, so we could visit the Greek Temples there.  There is a whole complex of an ancient city there with 3 temples: one for Poseidon, one for Helena, & one for Hera.  Each of them were built around 640 BC which is incredible.  They were GORGEOUS.  It was about 80 degrees & 100% humidity so my kids started melting as we explored the ruins.  They’re going to have a hard time in UT where the temps reach well over 100 degrees.  But they were troopers & explored all 3 temples.

After that we found a cute little gelato shop & got some ice cream, then walked a whopping 2 miles to the beach.  I honestly didn’t know if we’d make it, but we kept thinking about how great that water would be if we could just get there.

My kids are superstars & we made it!!  The beaches in this area aren’t free, so we wound up paying 20 Euro for 2 hours of pure joy which is amazing.  It was a private beach & for 20 Euro we got an umbrella with 2 beach chairs & a section of the beach to play in on our own.  It was paradise!!

The kids LOVE beaches.  They didn’t want to leave.  We had to be back on the boat by 5:30 so we packed up & walked the 2 miles back to the Paestum train station.  Trek got out his drone & got some great shots of the temples on our way back.

We made our way back to our boat.  As we got back on they offered us cold towels to wipe our faces & ice cold lemon water.  (My boys came to love those “water employees” each day.).  The first thing the kids did was go to deck 9 for some ice cream, even though dinner was only 30 minutes away. As soon as I got back on the boat, I got super sick again.  My body must just get sea sickness.  I threw up a few times, then felt fine again.  It was the weirdest thing.  I was just glad I was feeling better for dinner.  The hrest of the family went swimming until dinner time. Dinner was amazing again.  I had some chicken Parmesan, minestrone soup, & a cheese plate for dessert.

Trek flew his drone around the port a few times to get some great pictures of Solerno, then we spent the rest of the evening listening to live music as we sat around the pool & swam.  We were exhausted & all went to bed by 9:00 that night.  It was a great day.

(The kids LOVE the little towel animals the employees fold for them each day. This day it was a monkey & a rabbit.)
