Towards the end of September, Trek & his ROTC squadron got to go up to Logan, UT for the USU Search & Evade event. They grouped up in teams of 4, dressed up in the most ridiculous gilly suits & were set loose on the mountain all night long trying to find their way to checkpoints without getting caught by those searching for them.
I thought they were nuts.
#1: Do you know how freezing it is in late September in the mountains of Northern UT? Yeah. They were 100% going to freeze.
#2: How ridiculous are gilly suits?
Trek got a gilly suit & took turns scaring each of the kids with it. Poor kids. ha ha ha. Of course as soon as he scared them, they all wanted a turn putting it on.
So they did it. They took off around 6pm & wandered those mountains for hours. Trek lost his gloves in the first 20 minutes & lost feeling in his hands shortly after that. (I swear he's like a 5 year old!)
His team was able to evade their captures all night long. They got caught a couple of times, but the rules were that if you got caught & had something to bribe the "guards" with, they'd let you go without deducting points. How did they NOT get points? One of the members of their team had some awesome night vision goggles & all the guards that caught them "wanted a turn" looking through them! It totally saved them all night long.
At about 3am, they set up tents & slept over night & awaited the results.
Trek's team took 2nd place. They found all but one of the checkpoints in the fastest time.
Another team of Trek's cadets took first place so overall his squadron did AMAZING. They had so much fun. He can't wait to do it again next year.
