Getting Settled

Though we had been traveling for nearly 35 hours & were completely exhausted, we HAD to stay awake to combat the crazy jet lag our bodies were feeling.  We landed at 2 pm & it took us a while to get situated in our hotel/house.  Finally around 7pm, we were able to take a walk down the village for some dinner.  Mackenbach is a beautiful little village.

Very close to the house there is a döner kebap shop.  Döners are my all time favorite food here in Germany.  They aren't German at all, they are Turkish & they are delicious.  For dinner we got döners for some of us & pizzas for others.  It was amazing to get some apfelshörle again.  Apfelshörle was Trek & my favorite drink when we were in Germany 10 years ago.  It's basically apple juice & mineral water, but SO different than Martenelli's in the states.

My döner was delicious.  A döner kebap is a pita bread with hand carved meat inside (I never dare ask what kind of meat it is, I just know I like it & leave it at that.  Ignorance is bliss.).  They top it with 2 types of cabbage, bean sprouts, onions, cucumbers, & tomatoes . . . then top that off with a yogurt sauce & hot peppers.  They are DIVINE!

After our delicious dinner, Trek & I headed over to a local German market to get some food to survive on for 24 hours.  I forgot how amazing the German store's chocolate aisles are.  It's like heaven as far as the eye could see.

We went for food essentials & somehow managed to come home with 9 liters of apfelschörle.  Essentials right?  ha ha ha.  There's going to be a LOT more than that consumed over the next 3 years.

We finally got home around 10 pm & got the kids showered & ready for bed.  The sun doesn't set in the summer until almost 11pm.  We opened up the windows (German windows are the bomb!  Someday when we build the house of our dreams, they will have German windows.) on the 3rd floor & watched the sunset together to celebrate our new adventures.

Germany is amazing.  We are going to love it here.
