Mardi Gras + Added Craziness

February at the Potter house is always crazy.  With 4 birthdays in the span of one month, Valentine's Day, Mardi Gras, & then whatever else gets thrown our way, it's always a very FUN, but stressful month.  We had Trek's birthday, then Cadence's. . . Then we had Valentine's & Cadence's friend Emily here for a week.  The day after Emily left was Lorien's huge birthday party.  Then the day after the party was Stake Conference (a church gathering of several congregations).  I had several meetings in between Conference sessions as did Trek.  We basically planned on staying at the church all day so we could be in attendance at everything.  In the midst of all these meetings, Trek & I got pulled aside by our area authority (the person in charge of the whole Germany area of our church).  Trek then got asked to be a member in the new stake presidency which is a HUGE undertaking.  In our church we have "callings" which are like jobs we do to keep our congregations running effectively & the way it should be.  All these callings are volunteer (we're not paid to do them) & they give us an opportunity to serve each other.  My current calling is in the Young Women Presidency where I help teach & organize activities for the young ladies aged 11-18.  (Basically a weekly party planner for teens.  How fun is that?)  Now that Trek is in the Stake Presidency, we will be a lot busier.  He has several (like a TON) of meetings & he helps run all 6 wards (congregations) in our stake (a grouping of congregations.)  It's going to be very very busy, but very rewarding.  Any time you give of yourself in service to others, you're rewarded a hundredfold in blessings & joy.  We're excited for him to take on this new role, even if it means he will be busier than ever.

Trek also had a 2 week TDY in February meaning he missed Craiger's birthday as well as Mardi Gras.  We always miss him when he is away, but we still carry on like usual & have fun.  Mardi Gras is always a favorite in our house because of the King Cake.  Last year Bladen found the baby in his slice of King Cake so he got to make it this year.

I got to teach him all about yeast, rising, rolling, & kneading dough.  He did a fabulous job.

His king cake was beautiful!

I also use Mardi Gras to eat some good cajun foods.  This year I made red beans & rice with cajun style sausage & the kids LOVED it.  It's now a staple meal in our house because they loved it so much.

For dessert we ate Bladen's King Cake & Cadence found the baby in her piece.  Next year she'll get to make our King Cake which is great because it will be her last Mardi Gras with us before she leaves for college.  (sniff sniff. . . why do they have to grow up?)

Happy Mardi Gras everyone!
