If you told me this move was going to be this hard, I wouldn't have believed you. It seriously was just one thing after another.
The VERY FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL . . . . I got another phone call from the school asking me to quickly get to the school because Canyon has been in an accident.
This one WASN'T Canyon's fault! On the playground they have a toy they call the mushroom. It's a round set of monkey bars that the kids can hold onto & hang their legs (for pull ups), but it spins which is great fun. I guess a bunch of kids latched on to the mushroom while the recess monitor (who is a full fledged police officer mind you) began to spin them at super fast speeds. Canyon started yelling that his hands were slipping & to slow down, but the adult spun it faster. Eventually, Canyon's grip couldn't last & he flew backward off the mushroom & landed on his back shoulders. All the air was knocked out of him & he couldn't move. The school told him to get up & walk it off, but Canyon #1: was gasping for air & #2: couldn't get up. (I was FURIOUS after hearing this account from both Canyon & the other kids on the playground). Eventually an adult picked him up & helped him walk to the office. They tried to convince him to go back to class, but he told them he wanted me to come pick him up.
I made it there & I could tell the minute I saw him laying on the nurses bed thing that something was wrong. He told me that it hurt so bad that there were shockwaves going up & down his back & that he couldn't move it. I mentioned to the office that he had a previous back injury & that I needed to get him to a hospital to make sure he was ok. I could tell they were really nervous about that. I honestly think they knew the school was at fault this time & were worried about what I would do. They encouraged me to get him to go back to class & that it wasn't a big deal. I know my son & something was wrong.
I signed him out & went directly to the hospital where my momma instinct was proven correct. He had a new fracture in his T7 vertabrae. . . ANOTHER BROKEN BACK! What in the world?
We spent over 12 hours in the hospital this time & they referred us to another hospital for treatment. That hospital refused to touch him because he was so young & referred us to Primary Children's Hospital who couldn't see us for a week. I called the school to let them know he had a broken back & they were SCARED. They knew they were wrong in every single thing they tried to do. I kept Canyon home for about a week until we could get him cleared through Primary Children's. His class sent home several notes of encouragement while he was out of school.
Primary Children's was able to do a write up & action plan for returning to school (like we did with his previous break.). Not a great way to start the school year at a brand new school. He was out of school for a little bit, then we took baby steps forward allowing him in school with restrictions & specific rules. Then finally in mid-October he got the full thumbs up to be back to normal again.
Since then we've had several doctor & specialist appointments. They are wondering if his bone density is bad or if we're missing something medically that is causing him to break so easily. SO far, all tests have come back clear, but we see an endocrinologist in March to do some further digging. Honestly, he's just a crazy active kid that plays hard. I hope that's all it is, but we will continue to try other things just to be sure. The doctors here in UT have been great.
