Wernigerode Castle

On Saturday morning Trek woke up early & went on an 8 mile run with Gideon & Julia.  They found several creeks, witch huts, a fresh water spring, & other fun things along their trail.

Our little Airbnb was adorable.  It was built in the 1800's & had a barn built in the 1600's.  The lady who owned the house was the sweetest thing.  Her grandmother grew up in the house & it's been passed down from generation to generation.  It was a lot of fun staying there.  We had 3 living rooms, 3 dining rooms, 3 kitchens, & 3 bedrooms/3 bathrooms.  It was great.

We got up & ate breakfast then drove straight through the Harz Mountains.  The Grimm's Brothers wrote their fairy tales in these mountains.  They're also known as the witch mountains.  Many witches were hanged & burned in these mountains & were said to practice their witchcraft here.  The countryside is gorgeous.  Seeing it firsthand made Grimm's Fairy Tales come alive.

Our first stop on Saturday was Wernigerode Castle.  This was Trek's favorite castle from his mission.  He couldn't wait to show it to us.

(We actually booked a room IN the castle for New Year's Eve last year, but it got cancelled due to COVID.  They let us re-book for this New Year's so we'll be back in December.  I can't wait!)

This castle is beautiful.  It's beautiful on the outside & it's beautiful on the inside.  The wall around the castle is perfect for overlooking all the villages in the area as well as seeing the beautiful Harz mountains.  I can't wait to watch the fireworks from the wall for New Years.

I also love this castle because you get to go inside the whole thing.  Usually they let you see a room or two on the tour, but this one has 2 full tours that cover the entire interior.  The courtyard in the center is also absolutely beautiful.

This was one of my favorite castles ever.  I can't wait to come back!
