The 2nd day of our trip, we drove an hour to Bayeux, France to begin our tour of Normandy. We spent the morning exploring the city, the beautiful cathedral there, & the amazing tapestry on display there. I wish we could have taken pictures of the tapestry, but photos weren't allowed.
The Bayeux tapestry is 230 feet long & 20 inches tall. It's HUGE. It took almost 40 minutes to walk around the whole thing. It tells the story of William, Duke of Normandy & Harold, Earl of Wessex & the Battle of Hastings. It was made in the 1070's & is still beautiful & complete.
After touring the city a little bit, we hired a tour guide to drove us to Utah Beach & it's surrounding cliffs. We spent a good hour there just talking about what happened during D-Day. I was amazed at all those soldiers who scaled those cliffs knowing death was coming. . . & some were able to secure the beach anyway. What bravery!
Walking around Utah Beach, you can still see the German camps, guns, & craters from bombs. What an incredible piece of history.
It was a very humbling experience to be there.
