Sharon & Dale Visit - Day 4 - Trier & Birthday Fun

The last day my family was here, I took them to Trier, Germany (where Taya was born).  It's one of my favorite German cities & I knew they'd love it.  Trier was one of the capitals of Rome & the churches & gate to the city are still standing.  They were built in the 2nd & 3rd centuries.

We stopped at a bakery to get some breakfast.  The onion pretzel was DIVINE.

First we visited the Cathedral which has been built & added onto over & over & over again.  There are foundational walls still standing from the 3rd century.  I love this cathedral.  It's gorgeous.

In the crypt, there is a metal list of all the bishops who have served in this cathedral, the first in the year 250.  That's how OLD this cathedral is.  It's incredible & pieces of it are still original to that time period.

Some of the original walls & inscriptions from the 3rd century.

Right next to the main Cathedral of St. Peter is the Liebfrauenkirche which was built 1,000 years later in 1227AD.  This church has beautiful stain glass windows & tells the story of Christ's final walk with his cross before his crucifixion.  It was fun to recall it from our trip to Israel as I walked through each of the stations/murals in this church.

After visiting both churches, we wandered & shopped around the city center a bit.

Then we made our way to the Porta Nigra (The Roman City Gate).

I love visiting the Porta Nigra.  It was constructed in approximately 170AD.  It's the oldest building in Germany.  It's still in amazing condition too.

After touring the Porta Nigra, we were FREEZING, so we found a crepe shop & ordered some yummy crepes & waffles.

Then we drove back home so we'd be home in time for the kids.  Whitney & Keaton enjoyed some kinder eggs.

It was Craiger's birthday so we called our friend Tony (the gelato man) & he came in the freezing cold weather & brought freshly made gelato so we could celebrate Craiger.  We were nuts to eat ice cream in 25 degree weather, but it was SO MUCH FUN.

I was sad to see them all leave early the next morning.  It was a short trip, but we had a LOT of fun together.  I'm SO glad they were able to come out & visit before we moved.
