Bernkastel-Kues Christmas Market 2009

Saturday we took Opa to the Bernkastel-Kues Christmas Market. It had snowed the night before & was -11 degrees outside when we were there. Poor Opa (being from California) was wearing a light jacket with penny loafer shoes. He did have a hat on, but no gloves. He was an icicle! But he loved every minute of the European atmosphere. Bernkastel is one of my favorite villages & it really gets decked out for the holidays. Dad enjoyed posing with anything & everything that looked like it came out of a movie!

We were SO cold that we went into every store, bakery, etc. to get warm. We found a little market & Taya got a hold of the cutest little shopping cart. What a stylin' little 2 year old don't you think?

In the center market area, there is an old old old building built somewhere in the 1600's that they use as a life size advent calendar for the month of December. There are 24 windows in the building & they open the shutters of one window at a time each day. In the picture below you can see the colorful windows & the red windows. The red ones have numbers on them & the colorful ones depict different German Fairy Tales like Rumpelstilskin, Hansel & Gretel, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, & more. It was AMAZING!

So after about 30 minutes, we were frozen to the core, but on our way out the girls got a glimpse of a car "ride" & begged their Opa for a ride. So in the sub zero temperature they were riding these little cars that went around & around & around. Crazy kids!

By the time we made it back to the car, Lorien was screaming & crying from being so cold. Poor baby! Germany is FREEZING!!

As a side note . . . our 30 minutes in these freezing temperatures got Opa so sick that he was down & out for the next 4 days!!! Poor Opa! But he said it was worth it! I'm going to miss our beautiful German Christmas Villages!
