After visiting Caesarea, we hopped back in our tour bus & drove to Mount Carmel.
The most famous story in the Bible about Mount Carmel is found in 1 Kings Chapter 18. Basically, Elijah the prophet challenges the prophets of Baal to call down fire from heaven & burn their offering. They try all day to get Baal to pour fire from heaven, but they of course fail. Then Elijah pours water all over his alter & offering & then calls down fire from heaven to show the true power of God.
1 Kings 18:37-39
"Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the Lord God, & that thou has turned their heart back again. Then the fire of the Lord fell, & consumed the burnt sacrifice, & the wood, & the stones, & the dust, & licked up the water that was in the trench. And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; & they said The Lord, he is the God; The Lord, he is the God."
There is a statue on the very top of Mount Carmel depicting Elijah slaying the 450 prophets of Baal after this event in the scriptures.
There is also a beautiful church there with a balcony overlooking the most fertile valley in all of Israel. . . the Har Megiddo Valley also known as Armageddon.
We found an adorable nativity display inside the chapel of the church.
This was a fun little stop along our journey. It's always really exciting to see places you read about in the scriptures. I think the kids really enjoyed it too.
