Morocco - Day 3 - Camel Rides Through The Sahara Desert

We finally made it to the edge of the Sahara Desert around 5pm.  That’s where we met our camel guides.  They spent a few minutes getting each of us up on our camels.  The camels were the sweetest, calmest animals I’ve ever been around.  I was surprised because I thought they’d be kind of cranky.  Poor Craiger (the animal magnet) got the crazy camel.  He named him “Kevin” & Kevin whined & wailed the entire ride into the desert.  I was surprised he didn’t try to throw Craiger off his back.

About an hour into the desert, another guide came & swapped “Kevin” out with a calmer camel.  The desert itself was GORGEOUS.  The bright orange sand against the blue blue sky. . . there’s nothing like it.  It was about 85 degrees so it was hot, but it was gorgeous.  Riding camels was fun too.  It was similar to riding a horse, but you could definitely feel that you were riding on the tip top of a hump.  About an hour in, everything in your groin area starts to ache.  Your thighs hurt from hugging the sides of the saddle so you stay on, & in between your legs feels like you got kicked there really hard.  But I would ride them again in a heartbeat.  It was SO MUCH FUN.

About an hour in, we got off camels & watched the sun set over the sand dunes.  It was beautiful.  The kids had fun rolling down the larger dunes.  We were so covered in sand at that point that I didn’t even care anymore.  It was really really fun.

We hopped back on our camels & finished riding another hour towards our camp in the middle of the desert.  Once the sun went down, it almost instantly got cold.  It went from 85 degrees to about 32 degrees in less than a half hour.  That’s insane.  By the time we reached camp, we were itching to get our coats on.
