We jumped back in the van & literally drove ALL DAY LONG back to Marrakesh.
We stopped for lunch in a cute little place in the biggest oasis in Morocco. We had salad/omelette, couscous or Chicken Kebabs, & fruit. I got the couscous & it wound up being my favorite dish from the whole trip. It was yummy.
We drove from 11am-9pm that day. I slept a LOT because I was so tired from staying up so late in the desert camp. We drove all the way back to our original hotel there in the slums of the city. The night market was hopping & very busy so our driver couldn’t take us to the hotel, instead he found a guy on the streets to help us back to our hotel safely (we would never have found it on our own without him). We tipped him well for getting us there safely.
Most of the kids were exhausted so we left them in the hotel, but Taya, Bladen, Trek, & I went out to brave the night market. It was INCREDIBLE. There was music everywhere. People were dancing & playing instruments. People were selling food, spices, clothing & more. It was just a really culturally incredible place to be. Once again, there were many aggressive vendors, but not nearly as bad as they had been during the day. None of them physically touched us like the others did, but they’d walk up to us & talk to us trying to get us to come eat “sheep’s head” or “snails.” We did end up buying smoothies from a guy that was SO “smooth” talking . . . & he had great hair. ;-). He was really funny so we bought 2 fruit smoothies from him. Trek found little lanterns he liked so he haggled a guy down from 50 Durhams to 30 Durhams ($3). We walked away & then he decided he wanted another one. So we found another street vendor selling them & she wanted 50 Durhams, but Trek told her the other guy only wanted 30 & she gave one to us for 30. Trek is funny. I love watching him try new things. Haggling was hilarious with him. Then Taya & I were able to haggle down the price of head wraps to match our dresses. They were much cheaper than the ones out in the desert so Taya got a white one & I got a teal one. As we walked back to our hotel, Trek decided the 2 lanterns he got didn’t match so he wanted to go back & get a 3rd one to match the 1st. He’s SO funny. So he dropped Taya & I off at the hotel while he went back with Bladen to get a 3rd lantern. He got back & we went to bed. Our plane left at 7:30 so we had to be at the airport at 5am.
We woke up EARLY, got ready & packed up, & then Hmed picked us up & took us to the airport. Morocco security is crazy particular so I’m glad we got there early. We got through everything & even had an hour to spare. For once our flight was right on time & we were able to fly back to Germany no problem & landed at 11:30. It was a fast trip with LOTS of driving, but it was an experience we will remember forever.
